Chef Robert Smith

Norwalk Public Schools is pleased to welcome Chef Robert Smith, known as Chef Smitty, to the district.

Chef Smitty’s role includes ensuring that food served across the district is delicious, nutritious and visually appealing. He will also expand school tastings to give students the chance to try healthy foods such as Brussels sprouts and carrots prepared in simple, but appealing ways.

Another aspect of Chef Smitty’s role is to develop unique opportunities for food services staff to learn new cooking techniques. He will also be a part of menu writing for all NPS schools.

Prior to joining Whitsons Culinary Group, the food service provider for NPS, Chef Smitty worked as Food Service Director in Wethersfield, CT. A food service industry veteran, Chef Smitty’ experience ranges from working in private industry, senior living centers, colleges and K-12 school environments. He also helped to serve over 10,000 people a day during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah.

Chef Smitty’s position aligns with the goal of improving the quality of the NPS school lunch/food system as part of the 2016-2017 NPS Strategic Operating Plan.

NPS was recently awarded a $52,000 grant from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) to expand a “grab ‘n go” breakfast program piloted last year at Brookside Elementary School to a majority of schools across the district. For more information, click here.

Each day, NPS serves lunch to over 7,400 students across the district. Of those students, 4,100 receive free or reduced lunch.
