Applications for McMahon Healthcare Academy, The Marine Science Academy at Brien McMahon and the Digital Media & Communications Academy at Norwalk High School are now available online. Under the NPS Strategic Operating Plan, the mission of the district is to ensure that all students will be college and career ready by creating a student- centered learning environment in a collaborative culture. Through a robust range of themes, pathways, academies and magnet programs, NPS students will be prepared with 21st century skills.

McMahon Healthcare Academy

The Healthcare Academy offers students the ability to earn health certifications through a partnership with Norwalk Community College and Norwalk Hospital. Students who participate in the McMahon Healthcare Academy can earn certification, which will enable them to secure jobs after graduation such as an Emergency Medical Technician.

The Academy is an approved school for the Biomedical Science pathway for which all students will take the three-course sequence as part of their experience in the program with the opportunity to earn college credit in these areas. They will also gain membership in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA), a national organization of future healthcare professionals.

Eligibility: The Academy will accept 50 rising grade 9 students, including 10 who will be chosen from across the district. Those chosen via the lottery system will be enrolled as full time Brien McMahon students and will graduate with a Brien McMahon diploma as long as they remain in the program. The district will provide transportation for the 10 cross-district students.

Brien McMahon Marine Science Academy

Connecticut and Norwalk specifically have a rich maritime history along with a wealth of career opportunities for those prepared. The Marine Science Academy provides students with access to techniques and technology that are current and relevant in the diverse Marine Science field.

Through partnerships with local and regional industries in the field, students will gain hands on field experiences, internships and apprenticeships. Concurrently with STEM courses, students will follow a 4-course sequence of Marine Studies. In addition to the core-required classes at BMHS, students will enroll in courses focused on Marine Science, Oceanography, Environmental Sustainability, Navigation and more.

Norwalk High School Digital Media & Communications Academy

The Norwalk High School Digital Media & Communications Academy is a 21st century learning experience housed at Norwalk High School. The DMCA provides students with hands-on experiences that will enable them to enter college or career with a knowledge of industry standards and a mastery of storytelling.

The DMCA is currently collaborating with multiple industry partners, Norwalk Public Schools, the City of Norwalk, Columbus Magnet and West Rocks Middle School.

DMCA students will produce content through multiple mediums, working side-by-side with Norwalk High School teachers and professional partners who are experts in their fields. Students will learn how to be creative, conduct research and tell their story using programs such as Adobe Suite, InDesign, Dreamweaver.
