Norwalk Performs Well On Growth Benchmark Determined By The State

New Connecticut Smarter Balanced (SBAC) test results show NPS ranking first in Percent of Target Achieved (PTA) in English Language Arts (ELA) and math as compared to similar districts. The PTA is a measure of what portion of the target goal is achieved under the Connecticut Next Generation Accountability System. The rankings reflect the average growth results for all NPS students in the district. Norwalk also ranked first as compared to similar districts in growth results for high needs students. 

These annual results are a key part of how the state assesses a district’s academic progress. Growth in ELA and math account for two major “indicators,” or weighted results that make up the Next Generation Accountability report. This report includes a broad set of 12 indicators that help tell the story of how well a school is preparing its students for success in college, careers and life. 

Norwalk students in grades 3 through 8 achieved substantial growth in ELA and math compared to the state. NPS increased the average percent of target achieved for the growth indicator to 58.8 percent, compared to 55.4 percent for the state. Norwalk’s Math percent of target achieved increased to 64.6 percent, compared to the statewide percent of 61.7. 

Several schools delivered especially strong results. Cranbury Elementary School and Naramake Elementary School achieved the greatest growth in English Language Arts. Columbus Magnet School, Cranbury Elementary School, Marvin Elementary School, Naramake Elementary School and Tracey Elementary School showed substantial growth in math.
