Garbage bag gliders will be soaring, catapults launching and bold bridge designs on display this Saturday, May 13 at the first annual Norwalk STEM Expo starting at 10 am in the Brien McMahon gymnasium, 300 Highland Ave. Mayor Harry Rilling will kick off the citywide Expo with a proclamation declaring May 13 “Norwalk STEM Day.”

To align with modern academic goals, Norwalk Public Schools has transitioned from a traditional “Science Fair” to a newly designed STEM Expo encouraging students to apply critical thinking and problem solving skills to answer real world concerns.

The Norwalk STEM Expo will celebrate Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics learning with live demonstrations, STEM-related games, activities, and awards throughout the day. Mayor Rilling, Dr. Steven Adamowski, Superintendent, Board of Education members and other notable city dignitaries will serve as judges during the event.

The Expo will feature student winners from each school presenting their STEM projects, high school STEM demonstrations, and PreK students from Odyssey and ELLI classrooms displaying their individual STEM-based projects.

Finalists were chosen by district administrators and staff during a preliminary round of judging, which occurred over the past two weeks.

High school student groups will perform demonstrations throughout the day including Brien McMahon High School’s AP environmental class, Future Engineers, physics team, Health Occupation Student of America (HOSA) club, Norwalk High School’s astronomy club, robotics team, STEM Travelers and 3-D printer team, and Norwalk Pathways Academy of Briggs.

In addition to student projects, the Norwalk Fire and Police departments will present technology demonstrations. The Maritime Aquarium will offer attendees the opportunity to get up close to nature with an onsite touch tank.
