Cherese D. Chery has been appointed to the position of Chief Talent Officer for Norwalk Public Schools. Her appointment was approved by the Norwalk Board of Education at its meeting on May 17, 2016. Ms. Chery's official start date is July 11, 2016.

A strategic human resources leader with experience in both the public and private sectors, Ms. Chery is currently chief talent/human resources officer for New London Public Schools. In this role, she advises the superintendent and senior leaders on talent and labor strategies, with a focus on enhancement of staff quality and performance accountability. Her responsibilities include developing and driving recruitment strategies, ensuring that talent systems are efficient and effective, and overseeing employee policy and labor relations strategies. She is charged with overseeing, developing and launching innovative programs and systems in recruitment, hiring and selection; staffing and deployment; information and technology; compensation and benefits; and performance management and career development for all positions in the organization.

Prior to serving in New London, Ms. Chery was director of human resources for the State Education Resource Center (SERC) in Middletown.  She created, implemented and directed the human resource function at SERC, including employee relations, personnel/benefits administration, policies and procedures, legal compliance discipline, compensation, recruiting and retention, organizational training and development, HRIS/payroll and HR metrics. She implemented the Applicant Tracking system (Applitrack) as well as ADP as the HR information system with an employee self-service portal. 

Ms. Chery’s prior experience includes HR roles at Comcast (telecommunications), Hartford Hospital (healthcare), Talent Fusion (recruiting), Injectronics and APW Wright (manufacturing and New Boston Select Staffing (staffing). 

Ms. Chery earned an MBA with a concentration in HR management and labor relations from the New York Institute of Technology, and a BS in business administration from Fitchburg (MA) State College. Her professional affiliations include the Society for Human Resources Management, the National Association of Black School Educators and the Connecticut Association of School Personnel Administrators. She has been a member of the State of Connecticut Minority Teacher Recruitment Committee since 2013.
