Research proves that birth to age 10 is the best time to learn a second language.  In today’s global society, students fluent in more than one language will have a world of opportunities available to them for college, career and beyond.

As part of Norwalk Public School’s plan to create more choices that meet diverse student needs and interests, we are pleased to announce that Silvermine Elementary School will transition into a full dual language immersion school.

Beginning with the incoming Kindergarten class of 2016-17, Silvermine’s existing Mano-a-Mano program will expand to include all students. Silvermine will transition into a full Mano-a-Mano school as each grade level moves up, until the entire school is engaged in the dual-language program.

Norwalk Public Schools have been long-time leaders in international studies and dual language programming. The Center for Global Studies at Norwalk’s Brien McMahon High School is a well-known, inter-district magnet school that focuses on Arabic, Chinese and Japanese language, history, and culture.  Silvermine’s own Mano-a-Mano program dates back to 1998, back when it was becoming clearer that the younger years are the best time to learn a second language.  Since then, Silvermine has operated two classrooms at each grade level under the dual language English & Spanish instructional model.

At Silvermine, Mano-a-Mano teachers plan and coordinate instructional programs in a team teaching environment at each grade level:  one instructs in English, and the other in Spanish. The program strives to develop high levels of proficiency in a student’s first and second language, and to develop academic performance that is at or above grade level in both languages.

Parents who choose Silvermine’s Mano-a-Mano for their child do so for many reasons.  Benefits cited include:

  • Students in accelerated programs such as Mano-a-Mano outperform their monolingual peers.

  • Bilingual students demonstrate greater mental flexibility, creativity and problem-solving skills.

  • Mano-a-Mano students develop intercultural understanding and enhanced self-esteem.

  • Most colleges now require proficiency in a second language as a graduation requirement.  The number of college-level study abroad opportunities has also increased over the years.

  • Future employment opportunities are enhanced for those who have mastered a second language.

  • Students will have greater access to worldwide communications.

Silvermine’s Mano-a-Mano students will be well prepared to thrive in today’s interconnected and increasingly competitive global community.
