Dr. Steven Adamowski, Norwalk’s Superintendent of Schools, has proposed a 2016-17 school calendar to the Board of Education. The draft calendar will be voted on in February by the BOE. Until then, this remains a DRAFT only and is subject to change.  At the same time, the Superintendent also plans to propose a calendar for the 2017-18 school year, giving families and others in the community a head start on planning for the following school year.

As part of the District’s goal to Raise the Bar & Close the Gap, the 2016-17 draft calendar was designed to increase the amount of instructional time available for students, especially in the months before key state assessment tests in the spring.  Other changes were driven by the need to align with new guidelines set under state law for Regional Uniform School Calendars.

Those guidelines include:

    • At least 180 days of actual student school days

    • A common start date within the region before Labor Day

    • Uniform Professional Development days for certified employees

    • 3 uniform vacation periods:  December holidays, an April break and summer vacation.

    • Up to 5 flexible days available for districts to customize for local needs.

Highlights of the proposed calendar include:

First Day of School:   Norwalk would use one “flexible day” to start school on the Wednesday before Labor Day. All students in Grades 1-12 would start on August 31, 2016.

For teachers: new teachers would report on Aug. 25; Convocation would be Aug. 26; Professional Development would take place on Aug. 29 & 30, in alignment with the Uniform Regional Calendar.

Staggered Entry for Kindergarten students:  Half the Kindergarten class would attend school on Aug. 31, the second half will be in school on September 1.  All Kindergarteners would be in school together as of Sept. 2.

Grade 6 Orientation:  A District-wide orientation day would be scheduled for incoming Grade 6 students.

Columbus Day: Consistent with the Uniform Regional Calendar, Columbus Day would no longer be a holiday, adding an extra instructional day to the month.

Elementary Conferences:   To make sure that elementary conferences are as effective as possible, conference periods would be scheduled for December and March.  This schedule better aligns with the availability of trimester progress reports.  Secondary schools will have Professional Development programs during Elementary Conference nights.

Presidents Day Weekend:   The Professional Development day that will be held in March 2016 will be shifted to Thursday, February 16 for 2017.  This would be right before the Presidents Day holiday weekend.  Students would be off that day.  Friday, Feb. 17, 2017  would be designated a holiday for students and teachers. School is back in session on Tuesday, February 21, 2017.

April Vacation: A full week of April vacation, as outlined in the uniform calendar, remains as is on Norwalk's calendar.

End of Year:  Early dismissal days at the end-of-year would be reduced from 5 to 2.   June 9 would be the tentative last day of school, with any cancellations for inclement weather to be added to the end of the school year.

Revisions to the proposed calendar included input from the Norwalk Federation of Teachers, parents and PTO leaders via the PTO Council, and school administrators.
