The Norwalk Board of Education has established an Ad-Hoc Special Education Committee to oversee the implementation of recommendations from the 2015 CREC Report.

Dr. Yvel Crevecoeur has been appointed by BOE Chairman Mike Lyons to chair the committee.  An associate professor of special education at City College of New York, Dr. Crevecoeur earned a Ph.D. in special education from the University of Connecticut. He specializes in learning disabilities, English-language learners and instructional design.

The committee also includes Board of Education members Erik Anderson and Artie Kassimis, as well as Dr. Danyelle Williams, a teacher and head of the Special Education Department at Brien McMahon High School, parent Natalie Alonso, and parent Jeff Spahr, who is also the committee’s liaison for the Norwalk SpED Partners group.

According to Dr. Crevecoeur, the committee was established to support Dr. Adamowski, Superintendent of Schools, and his staff to improve special education services at Norwalk Public Schools. The initial goals and timelines of the Committee will align with several key priorities, including:

1. Review and approval of the Strategic Operating Plan, which will be presented to the Board beginning in March.

2. Dr. Adamowski’s 12 point plan for Special Education action items to be accomplished between January and July 2016.

3. Insights and feedback from the in-progress for a highly qualified Chief of Student Services  Once key positions have been filled and other critical aspects solidify (reorganization, other hires, establishment of programs/procedures, etc.), the Committee will be able to articulate more specific goals and timelines.

The committee’s first meeting take place in March.  Check the NPS website for the date and time, once set.
