An annual event sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, this observation celebrates our youngest learners.

Today, we know more than ever about the importance of the early years in shaping learning and development. The Strategic Plan adopted last year by Norwalk Public Schools recognizes this in several of the goals we have set, including a focus on making sure that all children are ready to enter Kindergarten, and ensuring that Norwalk students are on track for reading and other learning expectations by Grade 3. PreK programs at Norwalk Public Schools currently serve more than 200 children, and with more than 920 Kindergarten students, the population of young learners in our schools is significant. The teachers and staff who charged with this age group are doing very important work, and we greatly appreciate all their talents and commitment.

By recognizing the Week of the Young Child, the Board of Education joins with others who are marking this week with a variety of events. Those organizations include the City of Norwalk, the Norwalk Early Childhood Office and Early Childhood Council, Norwalk School Readiness Providers, the Norwalk Public Library and the United Way of Fairfield County. Events for the week include family game nights, story times, free books, free admission to the Maritime Aquarium, and a lot more. The Norwalk Public Schools website has more information about these events. We encourage all families to take advantage of the opportunities that will be available throughout the week.
