Norwalk’s Jefferson Science Magnet School has been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2014. The announcement was made by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan.

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle and high schools where students either achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. The award affirms the hard work of students, educators, families and communities in creating safe and welcoming schools where students master challenging content. Blue Ribbon schools demonstrate that all students can achieve to high levels.

Jefferson Science Magnet was one of 48 recognized as an Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing School, a designation reserved for the highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years.

The U.S. Department of Education will honor the 237 public and 50 private schools at a national recognition ceremony on Nov. 10-11 in Washington, D.C.  In its 32-year history, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed this coveted award on just under 7,900 of America’s schools.
