The Norwalk Board of Education has named James A. Connelly to serve as Interim Superintendent of Norwalk Public Schools.

Mr. Connelly has extensive experience as an interim superintendent in Connecticut, having served in that capacity in Naugatuck, Oxford, Montville, Putnam, Region 16 (Prospect-Beacon Falls), Woodbridge and Killingly. Prior to that, he led Bridgeport Public Schools as Superintendent from 1981 – 2000. His early career included roles as Director of Pupil Personnel Services for Berlin Public Schools, and as a special education teacher in Ridgefield, Greenwich and Fairfield.  

In addition to his educational leadership and teaching experience, Mr. Connelly currently works with the New England School Development Council on executive search planning and management, and as an educational consultant specializing in executive searching needs assessment, strategic planning and cultural diversity.  

Mr. Connelly holds a Master of Arts degree and Professional Diploma of Advanced Studies from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Science from Southern Connecticut State University.  

He is active in a number of community organizations, serving on the Board of Directors for the Child Guidance Center of Greater Bridgeport, as well as the Housatonic Community College Foundation and City Lights Gallery. He is also an educational advisor to the Total Learning Initiative of Action for Bridgeport Community Development (ABCD).

To ensure a smooth transition, Mr. Connelly is scheduled to start in Norwalk on January 19, so that he can work with current Superintendent Dr. Manuel Rivera before his departure at the end of January.
