 New  -Common Core State Standards

(See link below or left ... and please check back frequently for new documents & pages)

Welcome to the mathematics section of the Norwalk Public Schools website.  Our mathematics program aims to provide all students with the mathematical concepts and skills needed to be productive citizens in the 21st century.  In addition, we aim to provide all students with the ability to define, represent, and solve problems and to communicate their thoughts and ideas in a mathematical context.

Although the last formal mathematics curriculum revision cycle was completed in 2004, we have aligned all of our K-8 mathematics curricula to current State standards and published Pacing Guides that correspond to State Assessments.  Also published are lists of key academic Vocabulary at each grade level.  A new Elementary Math Steering Committee was a valuable resource in completing this work and creating District assessments that inform and drive our instruction.

At the secondary level, the Algebra I. curriculum has been the focus of the new Secondary Math Steering Committee.  This year (2011-2012) all Algebra I. classes at all schools (middle and high school) are participating in common benchmarks at the end of each marking period.

The big news across America is, of course, the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) movement.  Connecticut has adopted these standards, and Norwalk is working hard to meet the challenge of a new and more rigourous K-12 math curriculum.  The Curriculum Department is busy writing new Curricula and Pacing Guides; and we are "piloting" Common Core books at both the elementary and middle school levels.   Please see our Common Core link below or to the left.
