Norwalk Public Schools has won the Bonnie B. Carney Award of Excellence for Educational Communications in the Social Media category for its official district Facebook page. NPS also received an Honorable Mention in the Special Project category, where the district was recognized for the Modern Schools for a Growing City campaign

The annual awards are selected by the Connecticut Association of Boards of Education (CABE), and will be showcased at the organization’s annual convention this week.

The Norwalk Public Schools district Facebook page is a primary source for early notification about school closings, delays, and other emergency messages, with urgent posts quickly going viral and shared by thousands of parents. With privacy in mind, the “messenger” option is used by the district to respond directly to parents on specific issues and personal questions. In addition to time-sensitive information, the page also highlights academic programs, extracurricular activities, and special events, as well as day-to-day news on bus schedules, summer building and renovation work, and much more. In June, high school graduation processions were live streamed on the page and viewed by over 5,000 people.

With aging school facilities and a growing student population, the Norwalk Board of Education had initiated a comprehensive, multi-year school building analysis to determine how best to support families in the years to come. To educate and inform all stakeholders about the Board’s subsequent recommendations, the theme Modern Schools for a Growing City was created as the communications umbrella for a comprehensive outreach plan.  Tactics included a dedicated section on the district website; fact sheets and print materials in two languages; public forums throughout the city; facility tours; a community questionnaire; presentations to legislators, realtors and parent organizations; and traditional and social media outreach.

In 2016, NPS also received an Honorable Mention from CABE in the Special Project category for the 2016-2019 Strategic Operating Plan.
