Scott Hurwitz has been named principal of Brien McMahon High School. His appointment was confirmed on June 20, 2017 by the Norwalk Board of Education.

In his new role, Hurwitz will continue to foster an academic culture focused on student-centered and project-based learning, while expanding choice programs for all students. Through advisory and other programs, Hurwitz will also build upon the existing climate of acceptance, understanding, dignity, and harmony for all students.

Hurwitz was selected for the position following an extensive hiring process, including providing access to the application for both external and internal candidates, collaboration with the BMHS School Governance Council, and holding focus groups with staff, parents, and students.

Hurwitz served as BMHS housemaster since 2008. During his tenure as housemaster, he worked closely with a team of teachers to oversee the International Baccalaureate program, which successfully launched last year. He also collaborated with BMHS and district staff to create McMahon Healthcare Academy, oversaw all aspects of school preparedness, and supervised several academic departments.

Prior to his work as housemaster, Hurwitz taught 10th grade English, Graduation Preparation, and Journalism at BMHS. He also functioned as a CAPT coordinator, site council member, class advisor, and freshman baseball coach.

Hurwitz earned his Sixth-Year Certificate in Education Leadership from the University of Connecticut, and holds a Master of Science in Secondary English Education from the University of Bridgeport. He also has a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Connecticut.
